Widget of the Week : Taptu Search

The phrase ‘Useful Widget’ has almost become a recognized oxymoron these days. Most widgets stay on the phone for hardly a couple of minutes. Taptu is one among the exceptions. Taptu is originally a mobile search engine website with the motto ’search and share’.
Recently a beta widget was released. Its a simple search-engine plugin for the S60 standby. By default the widget is activated by pressing the ‘c’ key(the shortcut could be changed at will). Pressin ‘c’ opens up a search box.
Entering a keyword opens up the results in the S60 browser.

Well there are already some thousand search engines out there. I was very much concerned about the quality of the search results. To my surprise, there was not only quality but more variety.
For any given keyword, the result page displays the most relevant result from a plethora of categories viz desktop websites, mobile websites, images, videos, music, blog posts, games and apps, news stories, wikipedia, song lyrics………and so on. I think the engine uses some kind of predefined tags to fetch the results only from the relevant categories. We can then jump into the specific category in a click or two.

All the desktop webpages are loaded via google transcoder which is quite disappointing, given the rendering ability of the S60 browser.
The video pages have a direct ‘play clip’ link, clicking which fires up the video in real player. The video results are exhaustive to the core.

Ok, coming to the ’share’ part of Taptu’s motto, i should say i am much impressed. Opening a search result gives three options to share the link.

1. Send via email: I was asked to give the recipient’s email address and my name. Mail sent.

2. Send via sms: Again, my name(once), recipient’s mobile number with country code. The sms arrived in about a minute to the number(local).

3. Post to twitter: I had to give my twitter login credentials.
Taptu remembers my friend’s email and mobile numbers, so the next time i need to share something, its a one click job.
The widget did play with me a couple of times by rebooting my phone while entering a search.
Nevertheless, this widget still stands right below the google search plugin. And it isnt idle like the latter one!
The widget is under the testing phase. If you cant wait for the final release, become a beta tester and go grab it here . To learn more about the service, visit the Taptu blog.
